Freedom Matters

It should be of no surprise to anyone living in the world today that there is an over whelming number of people who take freedom for granted. For the majority of us it is something we seldom think about and is just a way of life we are accustomed to, especially those of us who are blessed to live in “the land of the free.” I so often wonder when we sing songs like our National Anthem if we truly think about the words and what they stand for. Or, are we just waiting for our favorite sporting or other event to start. However, if someone were to ask a former slave or a member of the armed forces past or present, a wrongly accused prisoner or Malala Yousafzai if freedom mattered, they would probably answer yes. Freedom matters because it is what our fore fathers fought for. Freedom matters because it is a right set forth in our Constitution. Freedom matters because of all the men and women who have lost their lives fighting for it. Freedom matters because of those who are willing to give up everything or stand up against anyone to get it. Our right to freedom or those who aren’t fortunate enough to have it should make us value it even more. To me, freedom matters because it is something I was lucky enough to be born with, and because of the selfless sacrifice of others, I have been lucky enough to keep.  - Katlyn Drain

  1. I agree that freedom is a huge privilege most of us were born with and we do take it for granted. Freedom is something I don't realize that many people in the world don't have, and I among others are so lucky to have it. I agree with many of Katlyn's opinions on the topic of freedom, especially the fact of all of those men and women who have sacrificed everything to insure our freedom. That is something I believe we need to remember everyday.

  2. I agree that freedom matters. We all need freedom. There are some that do not have the priveledge of having freedom, which is an awful thing. Freedom expands our possibilities in our society. A country without freedom is a terrible thing. I think we all should be happy to live in a place where freedom is allowed.

  3. Freedom is a privilege that most of us take for granted. That I myself have taken for granted. Many people are not born in the land of the free and would give their own life to have freedom. Like you said we are extremely privileged to have people giving their own lives for to keep our freedom to do the things that we want to do. Freedom truly matters.

  4. I agree, Freedom definitely matters. I admit that I, like many others, take it for granted as well. It's a little tragic that we go day to day worrying about petty things while people in other countries would literally kill to be in our positions. Americans too often use the expression "I can't" when honestly, they can. It's individuals in other countries who can't. Our opportunities are so broad. We are so blessed. You're right, freedom does matter and we earned it. We should show it off as much as we can.

  5. I agree that freedom definitely does matter. Like so many others, I do take it for granted. I do not try to though. If any saying is anything but false, it is "Freedom does not come free". We do have soldiers across seas fighting for us to stay free. A lot of people forget that, but not those who have or had family fight in wars and some not make it back. Freedom is great and when looking at some countries who do not have freedom, it makes me thankful that we do have it here in America.

  6. Freedom does matter, yes. We, as American's, are so lucky to have soldiers over seas fighting for that right. Without freedom life wouldn't be as fun. We would be unhappy. We are really and truly blesses to have the freedom that we do.

  7. I agree that freedom matters. Americans take for granted what many people dream of. The people that came to America in search of freedom know why it matters because they know life without freedom. In the United States we go and come as we please without the governments control. Freedom matters because it is the natural right of people to live their lives the way they want.

  8. Freedom absolutely matters, and we do take it for granted. There are many nations in this world that are not free like we are. We really do not understand how blessed we are to live in a nation where we can work wherever we want, marry whomever we want, and live however we want to. We really do not think about the words to our National Anthem and the cost of our freedom.

  9. There is no doubt that freedom matters. Freedom is something you can’t even see, yet it the biggest dream that so many people strive for. All people should have the opportunity to have free will and live without limitations. “Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.”-Abraham Lincoln

  10. I agree that freedom matters and that many people definitely take it for granted. We Americans have so many more privileges than those in most countries. If more people realized this, I believe that America would be able to move forward faster and not be so focused on the small things we don't have.

  11. We have only one life to live and it is our right as human-beings to be able to live it the way we want. Freedom matters very much because without it we are not in control of our own lives and therefore it is not up to us how we choose to use it. So many people have died to preserve the idea of freedom so it is our duty to acknowledge, enjoy, and spread it so those deaths are not in vain, and so the world can be a better place for everyone.

  12. As an American I do not see how you could not agree that freedom is important. All the losses we have suffered over the last 250 years have been to protect our precious right of freedom. I agree 100% that freedom is important. I believe that sometimes we take such a grateful thing for granted. I'm very proud and very fortunate to be a free citizen in the U.S.
