Language Matters

Is it possible to imagine a world without language? It would be void of almost every part of our modern culture. All of the luxuries people enjoy would cease to exist. Everything from literature to cultural diversity would not be possible. It is language’s power of communication that has allowed mankind to interact with one another since the dawn of time. Every aspect of human life depends on a language of some sort.
Foremost, our ability to form languages and communicate has allowed humanity to embrace writing as a form of expression. Without language, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and even J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone would not be possible; however, because we understand each other through language, we are able to explore elements of the human condition such as honor, tragedy, and love through works such as these.

Another part of humankind that is affected by language is culture. There are many different ethnicities and races, and an important part of these groups is their language. Whether they speak English, Chinese, Spanish, French, or one of the thousands of other languages in our world, language is a defining factor of a culture. It gives each group a sense of heritage, and allows us to see that, though we are all human, we are individuals with rich histories and backgrounds.

A life without writing and culture would be unimaginable for a civilization such as ours that depends on these things every day. As a result of our need to express ourselves, language matters. -

  1. Language is a beautiful thing. We are all different and our languages sometimes separates us from everyone else. I think that languages are a great thing to have. In fact Italian is a beautiful language, it is so pretty and elegantly spoken. The REAL english is of course lovely as well, we Americans do not always speak it the right way unfortunately.

  2. I agree that Language does matter and it is a beautiful thing. It makes some countries and their people unique. I love learning new languages. My family on my moms side is polish and I love learning some of those words. Spanish is one of my favorites, but of course I love English because it is easy for me since I grew up with it. There are so many different languages all around the world.

  3. Language is something our world uses to communicate everyday so absolutely language does matter. If people were to loose language we would not be able to interact with others at all it is an essential thing in our everyday lives. Like you said, our language gives us a sense of our own heritage for others to see.

  4. I agree that language does matter. I never took in to consideration how important it truly is until after I read this blog. Language is a huge part of art and culture. It does create obstacles considering that we cannot travel to any part of the world and be naturally fluent; however, this could be seen as a positive thing. I like how you put emphasis on the fact that even literature would suffer without it. Romeo and Juliet, in my opinion, would not be as beautiful without its language and dialect. Language contributes to a lot of factors and is overall important.

  6. In this post I agree with what Nicholas is saying by how much language effects our lives. If we did not have language the world would cease to exist as it does, not only would everything be more complex but it would limit so many things. I also agree with how it can effect our cultures. In the world today we don't realize how versatile languages are, but they help shape the cultures of the world today. Language is such a beautiful thing that is crucial to making the world run.

  7. I agree that language matters. Language is not only a way to communicate to other humans what we want or what we are doing. Language is a form of expression. Language can change the entire attitude of a paper. It is also important for people to be familiar with languages of other cultures. This will help people from different parts of the world to better identify with each other.

  8. Language matters because it is our main way of communicating with not only the rest of the world, but also future generations. It is a way of establishing peace among nations, sharing the ideas and art we create, and shining light on the problems and mistakes we have made so they will not be repeated. Language is a powerful tool that has great benefits to the world.
