Movies Matter

Movies play a big role in our culture.  From going with friends to the theatre to spending a night around the TV with a stack of favorite movies and popcorn, it’s hard to imagine what life would be like without movies.  The first motion picture was made in 1878, The Horse in Motion, by Eadweard Muybridge.  Since that first film, movies have continued to impact us in various ways.  Whether movies make us cry, laugh or scare us to death, they affect our lives in some sort of way.  Movies can teach us things as well, such as language, hardships, things about different cultures, etc.  They increase our basic knowledge, though we may not see it.  Movies let us escape from reality for a few hours and let us get lost in an imaginary world, and sometimes it is nice to have that escape.  They may also affect our moods; when we are sad we tend to watch sad movies and when we are happy we tend to watch comedies or feel-good movies.  Studies have shown that we are also very influenced by the types of movies we watch.  Some teens who watch violent movies frequently have been shown to be more likely to commit some type of crime or have anger issues.  The bottom line is movies affect the way we think, act, and see the world. - Lauren Barber

  1. I agree, totally. People watch movies everyday in their life. Even if it is just a small clip of something. I love all types of movies. I love a good thrill or even a good laugh. Some movies even send some people chills, from excitment. Movies trully are a huge thing in our society.

  2. I completely agree with this post. Movies affect us in our everyday lives. They teach us valuable lessons but can also influence people to commit crimes as well. Like you said, they can teach us about different cultures and history. Movies can depict our mood rather they make us happy, sad, or angry.

  3. I agree with this post. I am a huge movie lover. Passion for movies I think begins at an early age, as little kids we watch the Disney movies that make us think the world is such an amazing place full of love, laughter and no hurt or pain. Then as we grow older we see movies in a different way. I do believe that movies affect our lives.

  4. I completely agree with what Lauren said. Movies can make us show so many emotions which can actually lead to helping us out almost like a therapy or coping mechanism. Say someone was down or in a bad mood and they went to go see a comedy movie, it would cheer them up by making them laugh. By experience, over the years I've learned that movies are also a huge part of learning like you said. It can help kids learn things from the time they're are born. Teachers also use movies to try to get their point across in many situations. Without movies not only would it be boring world but it might lead to people missing out on their God given talent!

  5. Like everyone else has said, movies do matter. They entertain us by making us laugh, keeping us in suspense, and bringing some of our favorite books and stories to life, but they also move us by changing our perspective on certain things. For example, The Passion of the Christ has affected how people view the life of Jesus Christ and The Patriot may give people a new found appreciation for those that have fought for our country's freedom. Movies can have a major impact on our lives.

  6. Everyone is so insightful that it is intimidating! I agree that movies matter. It amazes me how film industry people have such creative ideas and are able to put their words into images. Movies create memorable moments that allow the viewers to reflect on important issues, topics, or pure fiction.

  7. Just like music, movies serve as an outlet from the real world and allow us to journey into a new world for a couple of hours. Not only do they serve as a form of entertainment, but like you said, they also increase our basic knowledge. They allow us to view situations from another person's perspective and create situations that we may haven't experienced before.

  8. Movies are extremely important to our culture. Its crazy to imagine our world without this form of entertainment. It truly is a work of art. Whether telling an inspirational of a man rising from nothing to save the world, or whether is just a buddy cop comedy meant to make you laugh, movies really do bring out the emotional part of everyone.
