Water Matters

Water is the most abundant resource on Earth. Humans are made of mostly water and need it to survive. The argument I want to raise is not about the importance of water. The argument I want to impose involves how humans manipulate water for their own gains for profit. What I mean is that people need water to survive and without it we would die. I find something wrong in the fact that people use water for personal profit. Can companies not just make water for free? We have all these bottles of water to choose from, and yet some of the companies bottling the water trick you into thinking they are pure when they only contain tap water with minerals. Others are purified but use salt in them to make you need more water. Survival is hard enough, so why do we charge for something so abundant and vital to our lives while also manipulating it for profit? I find something wrong in that. I understand charging for soda and other drinks that are modified to be about taste and sensation, but doing so for something as basic as water seems unethical. Our world is based on economy, and people are so used to it that this seems ok. Of course those companies who make the water bottles need money in order to continue production, but most of them bottle many other things besides water. Take a look at the Coca-Cola Company, for example. They make assorted drinks and make money off of that, but when it comes to water why charge at all?  Surely they get enough income to support their business, so why charge on something so vital for survival? Water matters to us for more than survival, but when we pay for it it reduces our funds needed for other necessary things. If it was free, we could be using our money for better things than to pay just to survive. Water is not a resource to be manipulated into earning profit for already rich companies at the expense of the people. Water is a resource that humans need and it should not be abused.  - Michael Fitzsimmons

  1. I completely agree. I dont think we should have to pay for something so valuable that we use everyday in order to survive. People already pay for sodas so I dont think we should have to pay the same amount or in some cases more for water. Water is everywhere and I think it shouldnt be sold for profit. I think companies make plenty of money on the other types of drinks they offer.

  2. I agree totally that waters matters. Everyday we use and drink water. Some of us do not like water but no matter what we must consume a small amount. We cook using water all the time. Our oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams all water. Water gives us a very important use of minearls and vitamins. Water keeps us nutritional and healthy.

  3. I agree water is a basic need for humans to survive. I don't think it should be sold for profit. Every person uses water every day for many of things, so why are we charging ourselves for an everyday necessity. Most bottling companies have plenty of other products they can make profit off of then selling water for profit.

  4. I agree! Water is necessary for survival while other beverages are technically not. I understand, as you do, that we should pay for the bottles they come in;however, water itself should be basically free. I have never understood why bottled beverages that contain flavor, vitamins, etc. are just as expensive as a bottle of water. When a bottle of water costs as much as a coke, I am easily persuaded to make the unhealthy choice and buy the coke.

  5. While I agree that water is necessary to survival, i disagree with the fact that companies should provide it for free. Companies do not provide other services needed to live for free, and water should not be an exception. Businesses like Dasani have to spend money in order to bottle and purify the water that is sold in grocery stores. Unless you go out to the local spring once a week, someone else is doing the work required to give you the water needed to live. Local utility companies have to pay to pump the water to your house and purify that water somewhat as well. This is the same concept as having someone pump your gas for you, it lessens the work you have to do, that you are in fact capable of doing, in order to get what you need easier.

  6. Water is escential to our survival, but companies charging for water that they purified and bottled certainly isn't something to get upset about. They put a lot of work and money into producing that product. If anyone has a problem with companies "exploiting" our rights to free water simply don't buy it and go to a water fountain. Many people around the world don't have clean drinking water and I believe complaining about having to pay $1.09 for a bottle is wrong.

  7. I do find it slightly funny that we have to pay for water, but we are paying for the bottle and the purity of the water. Moreover, safe water accessibility is not the only reason why it matters. Water is vital to all forms of life. It regulates climate, replenishes our bodies, transportation, etc.

  8. Of course we need water to survive. Like what's been said in the previous comments, we are paying for the purity of the water and the bottles that the water goes into. The companies who sell bottled water don't charge a lot for the drinks, so why not just pay it to have clean, pure water to drink?

  9. I would like to bring up another topic to those who view water should not be free. If someone finds a cure for cancer then should they charge anything for the cure at all for those who are in dire need of a cure? Is it rational to make profit off of something that saves people's lives? How is charging water different? All the money that is spent on water that could be manipultaed by the companies and not truly be healthy could be used for better things. Does it not seem rational to make water free? All these companies make so much money that there really is no need to make water cost anything and most people have so little money that they need it to be used for more appropriate things. Some people say the money we pay for water is used for the service of the water. Should every service in the world cost something or are there some instances where service is done for the good of the people? Is water a service or a necessity? It doesn't seem rational to have a necessity cost something just because distributing is a service. This brings me back to the issue of cancer. should someone charge for cancer just because they have to give it to the person? Does someone have to pay a person based on distributing the product when it is a necessity for the survial of the other person who needs it?

  10. It would be great if we did not have to pay for water, but I don't see how it is possible. The driving force of all people is money. It's a fact of life. Money is the main reason that these companies bottle beverages in the first place, even if it is essential for survival. While they may be unfair in their prices for bottled water, it is a fact of life that everything costs money. Even cancer treatments costs money, and it is not because people that develop these treatments are trying earn money at the expense of others. While they might want to give it away, they really cannot afford to because of the cost that goes into the research and development. Even if the bottling companies decided not to charge for the services, how would consumers obtain the water? Would it be available at convenient stores or in 24 packs at super markets? What would stop a greedy person who could afford the water from taking advantage and stocking up on bottled water, taking it away from those who cannot afford it. Money is what keeps the world going. Water is definitely necessary for survival, but it is just not possible for bottled water to be free of charge.
